Photos from the final night of Rotary Club of Des Monies Back Pack Program

Making a difference One Back Pack at a Time!
The Des Moines Area Food Bank has partnered with the Highline School District to distribute backpacks of food to children at risk of hunger over the weekends.  Of the 5,000 children in the elementary schools in the Highline School District, almost 3,000 qualify for the federal and reduced breakfast and lunch programs. With this program, backpacks filled with 6 kid-friendly meals are delivered to the schools for check-out on Fridays and are returned by the students on Monday.  For some children, these are their only two meals of the day. The backpack program represents an innovative way of providing families with additional resources to meet the basic food needs of their children.

Each month, the Rotary Club of Des Moines participates in the Des Moines Food Bank Back Pack program. Club members fill up to 400 backpacks to be distributed that weekend to children in need.  Rotarian and Community Service Chair,Steve Swank, brought this program to the attention of the Rotary Club of Des Moines several years ago and it has been an important part of the club's community outreach ever since. "We are thrilled to be giving back in such a meaningful way, knowing that we are helping the children in our community," Swank said at the last back pack program of the season.

June 4th is Opening Day for the Des Moines Farmers Market!

Opening day is fast approaching and the Des Moines Farmers Market is poised to start its six season. Coming off its most successful season to date, the market is looking to be bigger and more diversified than ever.  Returning will be most all of the vendors from last year along with plenty of new ones.  Among them is an organic farm from Snohomish that will be selling fresh lamb, pork, chickens and eggs.  Among the new prepared food vendors is local business owner, Marshall Hansen, with his portable wood fired pizza oven. Yummy goodness in two minutes!

Wood Fired Pizza Oven
June 4th opening day will start with a special presentation to manager Rikki Marohl for being named 2010 Market Manager of the year for the State of Washington. Lots of special activities will take place as well, including arts and craft projects for kids. One of the most unique displays will be the “truck farm” with its bed planted full of veggies.
So grab your shopping bag, or pick up one at the information booth, and get shopping! “Eating Local” is the Green thing to do because it supports your local small farmer and helps to preserve farm land from being paved over. Besides “when it’s fresh, it’s already gourmet.”
Look for more market updates during the season on your Rotary Blog, The Waterland Blog, as well as markets sites www.DMFM.org andFacebook.  You can also follow them on their new Twitter account!
The Rotary Club of Des Moines is a proud sponsor of this great local community event!  For more information on the Rotary Club of Des Moines, please visit http://www.dmrotary.org/ .
