West Coast Blues Fans! The Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest is Going Down This Saturday!

West coast blues fans, this is your weekend! Brown Paper Ticket is ticketing an incredible blues festival on Saturday, September 10  highlighting incredible local talent. The event is squeaking in at the tail end of the music festival season so this could be your last chance of the year to enjoy killer music outdoors.
We're enjoying a beautiful September here in the Seattle area so the weather should be perfect for the Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Festival. This festival now in its second year takes place on the shores of Puget Sound at Des Moines Beach Park. Bands include northwest blues legends Little Blue and the Bluenotes, The Fabulous Roofshakers and the soul-influenced rock of Left Hand Smoke who were recently voted "Seattle's Best Pop/Rock Band of the Year" by Seattle Weekly readers. And what goes better with great music in a beautiful outdoor setting? You guessed it, ice cold beer. Local breweries like Airways Brewing Company, Big Al's Brewing and Elliot Bay Brewing will be pouring libations for thirsty music lovers all day long. The festival gets going around noon and will continue into the night so get there early and find a nice spot to spread the picnic blanket, this could be the last weekend of sunshine for a while. Highline Music4Life Events in September

 

Two major events for the Highline Music4Life program are being held in Des Moines in September.  The Poverty Bay “Blues & Brews” event will be on Saturday, Sept. 10^th at the Des Moines Beach Park beginning at noon and will feature several prominent “Blues” groups, including Left Hand Smoke, Rod Cook & Toast, Little Bill & the Blues Notes and the Fabulous Roofshakers.

The second event will be the Highline Music4Life “Instrument Collection Day” on the following Saturday, Sept. 17^th, at the Des Moines Marina.   This will be the first of what are intended to be annual springtime events to ask adults who have unused musical instruments in their garages or attics to donate them to the Highline Music4Life program.   Both events are community-wide activities that are inspired by Des Moines Rotary with the active support of the Burien-White Center and SeaTac Rotary clubs.

“This will be our second annual ’Blues & Brews’ event,” says organizing chair  Steve Swank of Des Moines Rotary, “and we expect it to break last year’s record attendance.  There are several local breweries that will be represented and the ‘Blues’ music should be terrific.”  Free parking is available and tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door.   Details are available online at http://www.dmrotary.org/events.php .

“Used musical instruments are needed by all Highline students,” says Stefan Nelson, the district’s new Cultural Arts Specialist.   “Our program starts with fifth and sixth graders, but is designed to help as many low-income students in the upper grades as possible.  We can restore nearly any musical instrument.  All that’s needed is for someone who has a used musical instrument and understands the unique role it can have in a child’s education to decide to put it back into play.”

     Used musical instruments will be collected at the Sept. 17^th special event at the Des Moines Marina beginning at 10:00 a.m.   They may also be dropped off during normal business hours year-round at any Kennelly Keys Music store, the KeyBank branch at 22033 Marine View Drive South in Des Moines, the Windermere office at 401 SW 152nd St. in Burien or with any of the Rotary clubs involved.

Highline Music4Life is an ongoing community-wide activity to acquire musical instruments, supplies and repairs for low-income elementary (fourth and fifth grade) students in Highline Public Schools. It is a collaboration by  Highline Public Schools, the Rotary Club of Des Moines, the Highline Schools Foundation and many individuals and businesses that are partnering to expand music education for all children in the Highline School District.

If you haven't bought your tickets yet to the Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest on September 10th, what are you waiting for?! The forcast is calling for warm weather and what better way to spend the day in the sun than drinking great microbrews and listening to some awesome local talent!

The Wheels On The Bus Will Go Round & Round On September 10th!

Three exciting events are scattered throughout the city of Des Moines on September 10^th  and you won’t want to miss them!   

Events, Locations and Times of Events:

Farmers Market (South Marina Park) 10am to 2pm.

Poverty Bay Arts Festival (Marina District) 10am to  4pm.

Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Fest (Beach Park) 12 to 7pm.

You may be asking yourself, “How can I possibly get to them all?” Organizers of the Farmers Market, Arts Festival and the Blues & Brews Fest have arranged for the Des Moines Senior Center shuttle bus to provide courtesy transportation and have created a route that will connect you to the events no matter where you park in town.

There will designated bus stops at the Farmers Market and the Blues & Brews Fest. To catch the shuttle while attending the many locations during the Arts Festival, just “wave down” the driver for a ride to your next stop. The shuttle bus is scheduled to run from 9:45am to 7:30pm.
