First Annual Instrument Drive |
On Saturday, September 17th, Highline Music4 Life sponsored an instrument drive at the Des Moines Farmers Market. This was the first of what is intended to be an annual event to ask adults who have unused musical instruments in their garages or attics to donate them to the Highline Music4Life program. The program was inspired by Des Moines Rotary and with the active support of the Burien-White Center and SeaTac Rotary clubs. The overall goal is to provide gently used musical instruments to 5th & 6th grade students in the Highline School District.

Rotarians, Claudia Dickinson, Steve Swank, Don Warren and David Endicott man the booth |
It was a successful event, despite the cool weather and occasional rain, with several community members dropping off their donations. Market shoppers also stopped by the booth and after learning about the program committed to donating instruments to the program. Highline Music4Life has now collected over 78 instruments and $16,000 in cash donations. "We are seeing a very positive response from the community.", says Rotarian and organizing chair, Steve Swank, "In fact, we recently received a $1,000 donation from a community member in Des Moines during our Blues & Brews Fest".
If our readers are interested in organizing an instrument drive in their workplace, church or other organization, please contact Steve Swank or Dan Johnson of the Rotary Club of Des Moines. School districts around Washington State are grappling with how to help growing populations of homeless students, even as budget cuts further slash their ability to meet their federal obligation to do so. Being homeless can affect how children learn, can lead to depression, and can be misdiagnosed as learning disabilities, labels that stick with a child for years. High school students, in particular, go out of their way to hide the fact they’re homeless to avoid being stigmatized by peers, which makes it difficult to identify a need. Highline School District, like other districts, relies on service agencies to help them identify kids and teens whose families are homeless, as well as teachers, school volunteers and others who may spot a red flag that indicates homelessness. As the new school year approached at Mt. Rainier High School, it was estimated by Joanne Kandler, the Librarian and Rotary Interact Advisory at Mt. Rainier, that there would be approximately twenty-five students or more attending school this year that are homeless or living in some type of temporary housing.

Glenn Bishop, 2011 President Mark Rusnak and Steve Swank |
Members of the Rotary Club of Des Moines partnered with Mt. Rainier High School to assist with this concern. Rotarians, Mark Rusnak, Glenn Bishop and Stephen Swank, stepped up to the task and met at the Target Store at Westfield Mall to shop for these students. School supplies, clothing, and other miscellaneous items were purchased to allow these students to start the school year. The management at Target that night upon hearing about the project provided a 10% discount for the supplies that were purchased.
In response to the Rotary Club of Des Moines’ generous donation, Kandler wrote the following:
“Mt. Rainier High School wishes to extend a huge Thank you to the Rotary Club of Des Moines for the amazing amount of personal and school supplies you donated to our homeless and needy MRHS youth. It is astounding! I was thrilled to find that we can truly meet this problem head on and make a difference for these kids in need. OH HAPPY DAY!!!!”

Why should I support Highline Music4Life?
Music is part of a well-rounded education. And students who participate in instrumental music programs do better in math, science, history, for-eign languages, English, computer science and other scholastic disciplines.

West coast blues fans, this is your weekend! Brown Paper Ticket is ticketing an incredible blues festival on Saturday, September 10 highlighting incredible local talent. The event is squeaking in at the tail end of the music festival season so this could be your last chance of the year to enjoy killer music outdoors.
We're enjoying a beautiful September here in the Seattle area so the weather should be perfect for the Poverty Bay Blues and Brews Festival. This festival now in its second year takes place on the shores of Puget Sound at Des Moines Beach Park. Bands include northwest blues legends Little Blue and the Bluenotes, The Fabulous Roofshakers and the soul-influenced rock of Left Hand Smoke who were recently voted "Seattle's Best Pop/Rock Band of the Year" by Seattle Weekly readers. And what goes better with great music in a beautiful outdoor setting? You guessed it, ice cold beer. Local breweries like Airways Brewing Company, Big Al's Brewing and Elliot Bay Brewing will be pouring libations for thirsty music lovers all day long. The festival gets going around noon and will continue into the night so get there early and find a nice spot to spread the picnic blanket, this could be the last weekend of sunshine for a while. Tickets are still available so pick them up right over here.

Two major events for the Highline Music4Life program are being held in Des Moines in September. The Poverty Bay “Blues & Brews” event will be on Saturday, Sept. 10th at the Des Moines Beach Park beginning at noon and will feature several prominent “Blues” groups, including Left Hand Smoke, Rod Cook & Toast, Little Bill & the Blues Notes and the Fabulous Roofshakers.
The second event will be the Highline Music4Life “Instrument Collection Day” on the following Saturday, Sept. 17th, at the Des Moines Marina. This will be the first of what are intended to be annual springtime events to ask adults who have unused musical instruments in their garages or attics to donate them to the Highline Music4Life program. Both events are community-wide activities that are inspired by Des Moines Rotary with the active support of the Burien-White Center and SeaTac Rotary clubs.
“This will be our second annual ’Blues & Brews’ event,” says organizing chair Steve Swank of Des Moines Rotary, “and we expect it to break last year’s record attendance. There are several local breweries that will be represented and the ‘Blues’ music should be terrific.” Free parking is available and tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Details are available online at http://www.dmrotary.org/events.php .
“Used musical instruments are needed by all Highline students,” says Stefan Nelson, the district’s new Cultural Arts Specialist. “Our program starts with fifth and sixth graders, but is designed to help as many low-income students in the upper grades as possible. We can restore nearly any musical instrument. All that’s needed is for someone who has a used musical instrument and understands the unique role it can have in a child’s education to decide to put it back into play.”
Used musical instruments will be collected at the Sept. 17th special event at the Des Moines Marina beginning at 10:00 a.m. They may also be dropped off during normal business hours year-round at any Kennelly Keys Music store, the KeyBank branch at 22033 Marine View Drive South in Des Moines, the Windermere office at 401 SW 152nd St. in Burien or with any of the Rotary clubs involved.
Highline Music4Life is an ongoing community-wide activity to acquire musical instruments, supplies and repairs for low-income elementary (fourth and fifth grade) students in Highline Public Schools. It is a collaboration by Highline Public Schools, the Rotary Club of Des Moines, the Highline Schools Foundation and many individuals and businesses that are partnering to expand music education for all children in the Highline School District.
